About Gateshead
Gateshead is on the River Tyne’s south bank, opposite the city of Newcastle, to which it is joined by seven bridges. Its industrial roots can be traced back to coal mining in the Middle Ages before it rose to prominence as the birthplace of the modern railway and became renowned for shipbuilding and heavy engineering. Today, its access to the A1 and A19, as well as North East England’s major ports, make Gateshead a key distribution and manufacturing hub.
Focal points of the local industrial market include the Team Valley Trading Estate, which supports around 700 companies and 20,000 jobs; East Gateshead Industrial Estate, just off the A184 (Park Lane); and Follingsby Park, a modern industrial estate extending to over 100 acres and home to a 2 million-square-foot fulfilment centre for e-commerce giant Amazon.
Gateshead offers a cost-effective alternative to other parts of northern England. Furthermore, it has a readily available skills base, with nearly 20% of its labour force employed in the transport and storage or manufacturing sectors, a considerably larger share than the UK overall (12%).
