Situated in the Doon Valley, Dalmellington stands at 600 feet above sea level and is scattered over a hillside. The town developed around textiles, the railway, ironworks, coal mining and forestry, and this attractive settlement is dominated by the attractive Kirk of the Covenant, which is located at the top of the village. The Doon Valley Museum is housed in one of the oldest buildings in the town (built 1744), and explores the social and industrial heritage of the area and also boasts an art gallery. Loch Doon, near Dalmellington is the largest inland loch in southern Scotland, and is popular with outdoor enthusiasts who can enjoy a range of activities including walking, fishing and watersports etc, as well as attracting birdwatchers who come to see the Ospreys nesting. The area is also extremely popular with cyclists, and Dalmellington is on the cycle route from Lands End to John O’Groats, as well as the new South West Coastal 300 route. Other nearby amenities include a number of golf courses, as well as the Dark Sky Observatory. The town has a thriving centre with a range of independent shops, eating establishments and a post office.
