DESCRIPTION

Originally, the Woolwich Dockyard was a naval dockyard founded in 1512 to build the kings ‘Great Harry’ ship. Over the years many ships have been launched from the site, including the HMS Beagle in 1820 which was the ship that Charles Darwin undertook his voyages in. The dockyard closed in 1869 and since the site has been frequently modified and altered. The two dry docks, which are listed have been transformed into ponds having been permanently sealed from the Thames. The land between the two ponds, which accommodated the clubhouse for the South East London Aquatic Centre has been cleared and prepared for construction.
